When I installed the exhaust vent in my mushroom studio, I imagined the spores that would find their way through and out into the world, and wondered if I would find some rugged oyster mushrooms, perhaps, making a home out there. But lo and behold, there they were: a frock of stately pioppini casually sunning themselves, on a hot, dry day in June, no less! "I have to clone these," I thought to myself.
A beloved, delicious, versatile edible species, the Pioppino is truly a crowd-pleaser. Fast growing and adapted to a wide variety of wood types, it is a must-have for both hobbyists and commercial mushroom farms. It produces consistently large flushes within a month of inoculation into wood-based substrates. The subtle, nutty flavor compliments nearly any dish, and the classic morphology and crunchy texture make it appealing even to the least adventurous dinner guests.
A delightfully responsive, graceful culture, this strain readily fruits from agar plates and produces large clusters of mushrooms on cased, supplemented sawdust blocks. This strain is our favorite isolation bred from spore in the mushroom studio, and it takes to a wide variety of wood types and cultivation techniques.
