Dan, an astute mycologist with a balanced, grounded presence, was breaking the crust of his steaming sourdough as he pointed with the bread knife to a dried specimen perched on a shelf. "That's the Ganoderma I found in the alley last fall," he said with humble nonchalance. The vibrant color had become somewhat muted with time, but the distinct varnished top still glistened with stately elegance. He buttered a slice of bread for his daughter and then took me downstairs to see his rough-and-ready laboratory where, sprawling gracefully across a broad petri dish, the luxuriant mycelium of G. oregonense looked so lively I could have sworn it was reaching, searching, growing before my eyes. Moving on, he asked "Do you want to meet my pet slime mold?"
A close relative of the Reishi, revered for centuries as the mushroom of immortality, G. oregonense is a beautiful, fast-growing hardwood lover with profound medicinal benefits and great potential for both indoor and outdoor cultivation on sterilized or pasteurized sawdust, stumps and logs. It is adapted to a wide range of wood types, and the high-tensile mycelium also makes this a great candidate for myco-remediation projects.
Graciously donated to the collection, this wild clone of a Pacific Northwest native is one of the most hardy, tenacious characters in the show. It is with gratitude and delight that I offer it to you, to help spread and share its beauty and medicine with the world.
