Enoki, Velvet Foot (Flammulina velutipes)
12cc liquid culture syringe
$15 - $25 suggested donation SOLD OUT
Also known as the "velvet foot," F. velutipes is a choice edible with a long cultivation history and a lot of morphological variation.
Best known in its thoroughly domesticated form, this species is often grown in bottles in a low-light, high-CO2 environment to encourage tall, thin, colorless crunchy clusters, which are a wildly popular throughout Asian cuisine. Occurring naturally, it forms dense clusters on hardwoods where it has a slightly fuzzy texture, a golden or earthy hue and dense, meaty flesh.
This strain comes from a wild specimen from the southeastern U.S. It thrives in a higher temperature than more common commercial strains, making it a great candidate for growing alongside other popular gourmets like oysters. Presenting classic clustering wood-lover morphology, this strain has also responded well to bottle culture, though the fruits tend to retain more pigment than their more thoroughly domesticated albino cousins.
